Roger american dad annoying sound11/24/2023 ![]() The kid exiting the bathroom and saying to his friend “Man, your stream is so powerful” is probably the only thing in the episode that made me laugh because of how sudden and weird it is.I know it eventually disappears, because looking at the Smith house, behind that wall must be the garage. There’s a window on the stairs in the living room. ![]() I appreciate how Roger told Steve not to wear his Shazam shirt when he asked out Lisa Silver, and then later when we get to that scene, what is he wearing? It’s a subtle visual gag I’m pleased they didn’t feel the need to draw attention to.I’ve never cared much for the visuals in the intro, but the theme is undeniably catchy. The intro sounds a little different in this episode. The show definitely had teething problems. I have to honest though, it’s pretty bland and even cringe at times. One thing I appreciate about AD is how Stan’s presence as the titular character often doesn’t overpower the rest of the cast the way Peter does on FG, so I like the fact that the first episode is really more Steve-centric. It does a decent enough job of introducing the core cast, and Stan, Roger and Steve are clearly characters with potential, even if they come across as unoriginal stock archetypes to begin with. I’m being a little harsh, because as a pilot it is competent, if light on funny. I can imagine at the time a lot of people thought “so what does this show have to offer that’s fresh?” They could’ve at least switched up the art style, no? The cutaway gags and pop culture references scream FG but AD is noticeable tamer in comparison, and a big part of FG’s appeal was the shock humour. It’s clearly lacking an identity of its own. Season 1 is going to be a struggle, because this basically is political Family Guy. It also means that the majority of the jokes and scenarios in this episode are low-hanging fruit. Fortunately, AD was originally made as a spiritual successor to Family Guy, so it already had a ready-made fanbase. They’re probably the hardest episode of a show. Since the best comedy often comes from the viewer’s knowledge of an established character, you can see why pilots struggle to immediately hook an audience. You need to establish your premise, your main characters, your setting and, hopefully, your tone. I know there’s discrepancy about how the show is seasoned so I don’t know which model I’ll be following yet, and I might watch some episodes out of broadcast order because FOX aired episodes out of production which created continuity errors, but I don’t have to worry about that stuff quite yet.įirst episodes are challenging. So, I’ve decided to try and review every episode of American Dad as I re-watch the show from the start. FOX also treated the show poorly, as they are often want to do. It’s just a shame that by the time the show reached its full potential most casual viewers had stopped watching, and a lot of people still see it as another FG clone. But AD did eventually distinguish itself from its older sibling and find a unique and distinct style, and during those seasons I think it was FOX’s most consistently clever/hilarious animated comedy. Family Guy always cast a large shadow over the show in people’s minds, which wasn’t helped by the fact that AD’s admittedly weak first season basically is Family Guy Lite. I unironically believe it is one of the most underrated adult animated shows, and never truly got the level of recognition it deserved when it was at its peak.
